Recorded in 1959, these legendary performances still stand the test of time. Maag, who conducted these sessions, is still alive and active in the music scene. Recently, he has garnered attention for a notable series of Beethoven symphonies recorded for the Arts label. However, despite his talent, Maag has largely worked in obscurity and has not had the opportunity to record with major orchestras since these sessions. What a shame! The music featured on these recordings showcases truly superb Mozart playing. The approach is well-balanced, light, and airy, yet always maintains a sense of gravity to honor the music. The London Symphony Orchestra, featured on these recordings, demonstrates its excellence as a first-class Mozartean orchestra.
Interestingly, the actual tonal qualities of the recording may sound artificial to some listeners. The sounds produced do not replicate those of a real orchestra. However, the clarity and balance of the sound capture the essence and quality of the performances. The generosity of the program, lasting 80 minutes and 48 seconds (equivalent to an LP and two-thirds), offers a refreshing selection that avoids the clichés often heard in classical music recordings. This, along with the reasonable price of the disc, makes it even more appealing to music enthusiasts. --Leslie Gerber
